ChatGPT can now open and edit files from Google Drive directly in the chat window. When a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file is inserted via @-mention, it appears next to the conversation and can be modified through text input. Changes are immediately reflected in the actual file in Drive, eliminating the need for uploading or downloading.
ChatGPT now opens Google files directly next to the chat
Until now, working with ChatGPT on a Google Sheet or Document usually meant taking detours: downloading the file from Drive, uploading it to ChatGPT, saving the result, and then loading it back to Drive. As OpenAI announced via the official ChatGPT account, this detour is no longer necessary. Once Google Drive access is connected in ChatGPT, users can open the option “Add from Library” via the plus symbol next to the input field or bring a file directly into the chat with an @-mention. The Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file then appears as a separate window next to the conversation history, without creating a copy. ChatGPT reads the content as context and can summarize, compare, or make changes on request. An OpenAI employee confirmed to users that ChatGPT edits “the actual file in Google Drive, not a static copy.” Those familiar with the PowerPoint integration of ChatGPT will find a similar principle here: the AI works within the familiar program instead of forcing users into a separate window.
How the integration saves time in the office
An example from inside sales: a clerk maintains a quote list with forty items as a Google Sheet. Previously, she had to export the file every time she asked ChatGPT to remove duplicate entries or add a missing discount column, then manually upload the edited version back. Now she opens the sheet directly via @-mention in the chat, requests the cleanup and a new column with discount percentages – and the change appears immediately in the original file. Colleagues with access to the same sheet see the new state without any further steps, without anyone needing to send or save a new version.
Here is how to get started:
- Click the plus symbol next to the input field in ChatGPT.
- Select “Add from Library” and connect Google Drive if not done yet.
- Choose the desired file or type it in via @-mention.
- Formulate the change request in plain language while the file stays visible next to it.
- Check the result – the change is already saved in the actual Drive file.
Costs, access, and limits of the new feature
Free ChatGPT accounts are excluded. At minimum a Plus subscription is required, which costs around 23 euros per month in Germany; Pro, Business, and Enterprise accounts also have access. The cheaper entry-level tier ChatGPT Go does not currently qualify. The integration is currently only available on computers in web browsers, with mobile apps expected to follow later. Shared drives are also not yet supported by ChatGPT – only the user’s own drive and files shared directly with the user can be connected. Unlike Google’s own search across multiple files in Drive, which has so far only answered questions, ChatGPT can now also actively write changes back. Tracking individual editing steps, as with the comment or version history feature in Google Docs, is still missing in ChatGPT.
What will matter is whether companies want to allow an external AI direct write access to company documents. Unlike the previous approach of uploading a copy, ChatGPT now modifies the original file in Drive, without individual editing steps being easily traceable so far. Anyone entering customer or contract data should therefore clarify beforehand whether internal policies allow direct AI access to their own Drive storage.
