Google has doubled the cell limit for tables in Google Sheets from 10 to 20 million cells. Anyone importing large amounts of data from accounting, inventory, or customer management programs can now collect it in a single table more often, instead of splitting it up. The expansion is already active for many users and costs nothing extra.
Sheets now handles tables twice as large
Until now, a Google Sheet topped out at 10 million cells, whether it was created directly in Sheets or imported from an Excel or CSV file. As Google states in its Workspace Updates blog, the limit is now up to 20 million cells per spreadsheet. A cell is a single field at the intersection of a row and column, such as a date, an amount, or a name.
Anyone who previously hit the old ceiling at around 500,000 rows and 20 columns can now fit about a million rows into the same spreadsheet. The column limit stays unchanged at 18,278 columns, according to Google’s help page on size limits; only the total cell count has grown. Imported Excel and CSV files automatically benefit from the new limit too, without users having to change anything. Google also says it plans to raise the allowed file size for imports next; the company gives no specific date for that yet. Just last August, Google Sheets gained a different AI feature with interactive mini-apps built from spreadsheet data. This time, the change is purely about a spreadsheet’s raw capacity.
Accounting and admin teams stop splitting files
In daily office work, the benefit shows up mainly with large, growing datasets. An accounting employee wants to load a full annual export of every booking from the inventory system into one spreadsheet. Until now, she often had to split the file across two or three sheets once the cell count crossed the old limit. With the new ceiling, a much larger export now fits into a single spreadsheet. Formulas and filters keep working across it without breaking. Anyone who already turns PDF invoices into an Excel table using ChatGPT benefits from the same higher cell limit when merging that data afterward.
Administration and assistant roles see a similar benefit with customer lists, inventories, or multi-year schedules that used to be trimmed or split across several files for lack of space. Anyone handing such a spreadsheet to a colleague will less often need to explain why part of the data sits in a second file. Pivot-table analysis also runs more smoothly, since all the source data stays in one place instead of being linked across several files. Older months or years used to get deleted from an active spreadsheet simply to save space. That older data can now stay directly accessible for longer instead of being archived separately.
The rollout continues into late September
The expansion applies both to personal Google accounts with free Gmail access and to paid Google Workspace and Workspace Individual subscriptions, in each case at no extra cost. No setup by an IT department is required; the company explicitly states there is no admin control for this feature. Anyone who wants to try the higher cell count can simply open an existing or new spreadsheet in Google Sheets. That works on the web, on desktop, and through the mobile app.
The new limit isn’t fully visible everywhere yet, though: accounts on the fast update track (Rapid Release) have been getting it in stages since September 10, over as long as fifteen days, while business accounts on the slower standard track (Scheduled Release) only start receiving it on September 28. Anyone who doesn’t see the new limit in the coming days is likely on an account scheduled for later in the rollout. Google names no country restriction; the expansion applies worldwide, including in Germany and the EU.
What matters most is how many companies actually push against the new limit in practice. Most office spreadsheets stay well below it; the expansion mainly changes things for raw data exports and data analysis involving very many rows. Anyone loading sensitive customer or company data into such large spreadsheets should still follow their organization’s usual data-protection rules. More capacity, after all, also means more data sitting in one single place.
