OpenAI has expanded the voice function of ChatGPT on September 23, 2026, to have direct access to email, calendar, and Slack. Users can speak tasks instead of typing them and choose between the models GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna for this purpose. In the work mode ChatGPT Work, complete documents and spreadsheets can also be created on demand.
Voice mode integrates email inbox and calendar
When addressing ChatGPT by voice, it searches the email inbox for a specific message or lets the user know if someone has already replied. The voice function also finds a free half hour in the calendar and immediately schedules an appointment, while in shared Slack channels, it searches for relevant conversations. Those on the go who want to quickly know if a colleague has responded to an important message do not need to open the app or type. OpenAI announced the three plugins on September 23, 2026, on the platform X.
Three model variants of the GPT-6 series are available for spoken tasks: Astra for complex programming and research tasks as well as long documents, Sol for everyday inquiries, and the leaner Luna for quick queries on the go. In the work mode ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI introduced in July 2026, it is now possible to work completely by voice: Documents, presentations, websites, and spreadsheets can be created on demand, and even multi-step tasks in the browser can be initiated by voice command. If a voice call is interrupted prematurely, ChatGPT continues the task in writing in the chat.
Access depends on the chosen plan
Not all accounts receive the full range of features equally. In the free basic plan and the cheaper entry-level subscription Go, the voice function connects with the plugins, but the work mode ChatGPT Work remains locked there, as listed in a tariff overview by How2Shout. Only from the Plus subscription for $20 per month and in the more expensive Pro plan for $200 per month does the work mode fully engage.
For enterprise and educational accounts, administrators set up their own permissions and determine which tools can connect with ChatGPT Work and which actions require prior confirmation, such as before the AI sends an email. Users also retain control over which services ChatGPT can access and when a follow-up question arises. A comparable voice access to Gmail, Calendar, and Slack was already introduced by Anthropic’s assistant Claude in July 2026, partly already in the free account, while ChatGPT ties the function to higher plans. In August, OpenAI initially opened the voice mode for business accounts with files, and now calendar, email, and Slack are added as the next expansion step.
It remains to be seen how reliably the voice control performs with longer tasks that connect multiple services in succession. An assessment by Superpower Daily warns that the examples shown so far alone do not prove how stable ChatGPT can maintain a multi-step chain of calendar, inbox, and Slack. It will be crucial whether companies actually grant their employees the necessary permissions or remain cautious due to security concerns.
