Anthropic's push into biomedicine

Anthropic has been building its own life-sciences arm since mid-2026. On June 30 the company unveiled the Claude Science research environment and announced its own preclinical drug discovery programs for neglected diseases. In late August it followed up with the Model Hardware Standard, an interface that lets AI agents control lab equipment and robots directly – early tests ran at Genentech, among others. In September, Reuters revealed that Anthropic had been operating a physical biology lab in the Bay Area for months, built on its April acquisition of Coefficient Bio.

This dossier tracks the stages of that push – from the software sold to pharma clients such as Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk, through lab automation, to the question of whether basic research turns into a pharma business of its own. Anthropic has so far ruled out running clinical trials itself.
