Google Vids now automatically transforms Word files, PDF reports, and Google Docs into short videos with voiceovers and appropriate images. The rollout has been ongoing since September 2, 2026, and will reach all eligible accounts by mid-September. Free personal Google accounts will not receive the feature – a paid Workspace or Google AI subscription is required.
Google Vids builds script and video in just a few steps
The new feature is internally named “Docs to Video” and can be opened directly in the browser without the need for additional software to be installed. As Google announces in the Workspace blog, the AI reads an uploaded document, divides it into sections, and creates a finished voiceover script from it. Each text section is automatically turned into its own video scene. Before the actual video creation, the script can still be adjusted, shortened, or reduced by individual scenes. According to the Google Help page, the operation proceeds in five steps:
- Open Vids.new and select the “Docs to Video” option in the “File” menu
- Upload a Word file, a PDF, or a Google Doc
- Review the automatically created voiceover script and change text or delete scenes if necessary
- Choose an AI voice for the narration
- Click “Generate” and download or share the finished video directly
A quarterly report becomes an explanatory video without editing software
A practical example from the office: A clerk uploads a ten-page quarterly report as a PDF. Google Vids divides the text into individual sections, narrates them with an AI voice, and delivers a two- to three-minute video within minutes, which can be sent via link to colleagues who do not have time for the full report. Similarly, a work instruction, a proposal, or an onboarding document can be transformed into a short explanatory video, all without a camera, microphone, or editing software. Those who want to record a presentation that has already been given can use the separate recording feature, with which Google Slides has been saving presentations directly as video since August 2026. The new document feature does not replace this recording but complements it in cases where there is no oral presentation yet – only the finished text.
Only business and paid accounts have access
According to Google, the feature is available to users with Google Workspace Business Starter, Standard, or Plus, the Enterprise tiers, Education Plus, and Non-Profit accounts. Those who pay privately need a subscription to Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra. Free personal Google accounts are excluded. Admin activation is not required; the feature is available immediately once the phased rollout reaches the user’s account. For organizations with the so-called Rapid Release channel, it was already usable from September 2, while all others follow through the Scheduled Release channel since September 5 and may wait up to 15 days for activation. No restrictions on specific countries or languages are mentioned; thus, the feature should also be usable in Germany and the rest of the EU. It is used exclusively in the browser at the address vids.new, and no app or additional installation is required.
The crucial factor will be how reliably video creation actually works in everyday life: An earlier test report from Android Authority describes that while the AI reliably created a script, the subsequent video generation initially aborted with an error message. Anyone incorporating confidential customer or contract data into a document should clarify internally whether such content can be processed through the AI feature. It remains to be seen how well the automatically generated images and the AI voice actually match the user’s document – this can only be reliably assessed after the complete rollout in the coming weeks.
