A quarterly report is ready as a Word file, but a presentation is still needed for the team meeting in the afternoon. Copilot in PowerPoint takes care of this step: from the existing text, an initial set of slides is automatically created with titles, images, and speaker notes. Once you know the process, you no longer have to create slides point by point manually.
Copilot creates an initial set of slides from the Word report
Copilot in PowerPoint reads the content of a selected Word document according to Microsoft Support and builds a complete draft including images and speaker notes. The function requires a clearly structured text: Heading 1 is usually used as the slide title, Heading 2 as a separate section. If the document already contains images, Copilot automatically incorporates them into the appropriate slide. According to Microsoft, this works most reliably with Word files under 24 megabytes.
The process can be repeated in a few steps:
- Clearly structure the Word report with headings and subheadings.
- Open a new, empty presentation in PowerPoint.
- Select the Copilot button in the ribbon on the home page.
- Enter or click “Create presentation from file” in the Copilot window.
- Confirm the desired Word document from the file selection.
- Review the generated set of slides with images and speaker notes.
- Check numbers, technical terms, and captions, and add company layout.

This way, a multi-page report can be turned into a presentable presentation in just a few minutes, instead of creating each slide individually. What remains is mainly proofreading and refining individual slides, no longer just the design. Microsoft has similarly automated other office tasks: Copilot in SharePoint creates finished Word and Excel files from existing folder contents, and Copilot in Excel even takes over parts of the monthly closing. The PowerPoint function thus joins a growing number of automated Office tasks.
Costs, access, and requirements at a glance
In the company account, the necessary Microsoft 365 Copilot license costs according to the Microsoft pricing page 15.60 euros per user per month at the promotional rate until the end of September 2026, and then regularly 18.20 euros. A valid Microsoft 365 Business subscription is also required. Private users without a company account can instead use Copilot Pro for around 22 euros per month, also as an add-on to an existing Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.
With a company license, Word content remains within the existing company boundaries according to Microsoft and does not contribute to the training of the underlying AI models. If the report contains particularly sensitive customer or personnel data, it is still worth taking a quick look at the IT policy of your own company before uploading.
The generated set of slides remains only a first draft. Copilot does not understand the content of the report but organizes text and images according to recognized patterns. Misassigned numbers, interchangeable image motifs, or inconsistent layouts can occur. If passed on unchecked to colleagues or clients, such errors can quickly lead to inquiries or correction loops.
