Microsoft Teams will now display automatic meeting summaries in the language of each individual participant, derived from their chosen translation during the meeting. Those who previously had to translate the minutes themselves can completely skip this step. The transition has been automatically rolling out worldwide since mid-August 2026 and costs nothing in addition to the existing license for summaries.

The feature referred to as Recap in Microsoft Teams automatically summarizes after each meeting who said what, what decisions were made, and what tasks are open. Until now, this protocol appeared for all participants in the same language – usually the one in which the meeting was held. This is now changing: Teams checks which language a person had set for live captions or the interpreter function during the meeting and automatically creates the summary in exactly that language.
As Microsoft describes on its own help page for the interpreter function, the summary is “automatically generated in the translation language selected for live transcription and captions.” The basis is the same technology that already provides live translations during the conversation – it is now additionally applied to the follow-up minutes. After creation, the language of the summary can also be changed later if a different one is needed.
An example: international project team saves on translation
A team assistant in Frankfurt invites colleagues in Madrid and Warsaw to a kick-off meeting. Each person activates live captions in their own language at the beginning of the call – German, Spanish, Polish. After the meeting, each participant opens the same automatic summary but sees it in their own language: open tasks, discussed dates, and important figures, without anyone having to translate afterwards or send a second version.
As the basic function Recap in Teams shows, automatic minutes primarily save follow-up time in office life. The new language adjustment specifically extends this benefit for teams with international colleagues, customer contacts abroad, or distributed locations – a scenario that occurs quite frequently in German offices with European partner companies.
Availability: global launch at no additional cost
According to the specialist service M365 Admin, the transition began in early August 2026 initially in a limited manner and was available worldwide by early September 2026 – also in Germany and the rest of the EU. Activation by the IT department is not necessary; the function activates itself.
The same license that is already required for the summary function remains a prerequisite: Teams Premium or a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. German is among the supported languages for interpreters and live captions. According to Microsoft, a Copilot license also automatically includes 20 hours of interpreter use per person per month.
Here’s how to use the new language adjustment in everyday life:
- Activate live captions or the interpreter function in Teams before the meeting.
- Select your own language for captions or translation.
- Open the automatic summary after the meeting.
- If necessary, choose another available language from the language menu.
It remains to be seen how reliable the automatic translation is for technical terms from accounting, law, or technology – especially for important commitments or figures, a second look at the original minutes is worthwhile. Those who discuss customer or contract data in such meetings should also observe internal guidelines for handling sensitive information in AI summaries. The real key point will be whether Microsoft will also extend the language adjustment to Outlook calendar invitations or shared notes in the future – so far, it remains limited to the Teams minutes.
