OpenAI GPT-5.6: The Pricing Strategy

From the July market launch to the August 2026 Sol cut: how OpenAI has been gradually lowering GPT-5.6 family prices.

Since the GPT-5.6 family launched on July 9, 2026, OpenAI has been gradually cutting the prices of its language models. The cheaper models Luna and Terra came first, on July 30, 2026, with discounts of up to 80 percent. On August 21, 2026, the flagship GPT-5.6 Sol, untouched until then, followed suit and became more than 20 percent cheaper – for the first time undercutting Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.

The backdrop is growing competitive pressure from Anthropic and Chinese providers such as DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot, all offering their models at lower prices.
