Anthropic dissolves its separate tool Cowork and fully merges it with the familiar Claude chat. Since September 16, 2026, the chatbot also drafts documents and presentations there, without users having to choose a separate app beforehand. New for this are the tools Claude Docs and Claude Slides, which initially appear as beta.
Anthropic consolidates chat, Cowork, and design in one interface
Until now, users had to decide in advance whether a task belonged in the normal chat or in the agent-like Cowork tool. This separation is eliminated: Claude now recognizes on its own whether a request requires a simple conversation, a longer research project, or a design task. The previously separate tool Claude Design, which creates visual designs such as slides or prototypes, can now also be invoked directly from a regular conversation. This step is the provisional final stage of a gradual approach. Already in August, Anthropic merged the memory of chat and Cowork. Information from one area has since been automatically available in the other. According to Anthropic, those who already use Cowork do not lose anything: chat histories, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills are automatically retained. A manual transfer or rebuilding of existing automations is therefore not necessary. Anthropic justifies the step with less friction in everyday work: those who no longer have to think in advance about which tool fits the task reach results faster.
Claude Docs and Claude Slides are created directly in the conversation
Claude Docs is a text editor that can be edited like a shared document: Claude writes a first draft, comments on its own decisions, and allows corrections in the ongoing conversation. The application exports finished texts as Word files, PDFs, Google Docs, or Markdown. Claude Slides creates presentations in the same way: users edit individual slides in the browser and let Claude present directly. The result can also be downloaded as a PowerPoint or PDF file. Both tools sit in the artifact storage of the respective chat and can be shared via link with colleagues, who can then collaborate in real time. Docs and Slides differ significantly from the already existing add-ins Claude for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The add-ins run within the Microsoft programs and carry context between Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Docs and Slides, by contrast, are browser-based and run directly in the Claude chat, requiring no Microsoft account. How widespread the need for such tools is shows in a survey from market researcher CCS Insight. About half of the surveyed employees who use generative AI at work reportedly use it mainly for creating or editing reports and documents.
Rollout begins for Pro and Max accounts this week
Access starts staggered. Customers on the paid Pro and Max plans get the new interface, according to Anthropic, over the coming weeks on web, desktop, and mobile. Team and free accounts are expected to follow, though the company gives no fixed date for that. Corporate customers on an enterprise plan decide through their own IT department when the transition takes effect. Anthropic guarantees a lead time of at least 30 days for that. No additional costs apply; usage counts toward the existing quota of the respective subscription. The Anthropic blog post does not comment specifically on availability in Germany or the EU. Since Pro and Max subscriptions are already regularly available there, access is likely to be activated alongside the international rollout. Competitive pressure is meanwhile coming from OpenAI: just a few days earlier, the company announced that ChatGPT will now draft texts directly in a sidebar inside Microsoft Word. Both providers are thus targeting the same everyday tasks – writing reports, proposals, or presentations without switching between multiple programs.
What will matter is whether the simplified interface actually means fewer clicks in practice, or whether users will just have to relearn, elsewhere, where one task ends and another begins. It also remains open how long team and free accounts will have to wait for the tools, and whether Anthropic further dissolves the boundary with the existing Microsoft add-ins in a next step.
