OpenAI connected ChatGPT Health to the patient-record system Epic on September 1, 2026, which manages data for more than 325 million people in hospitals and practices worldwide. Physicians can now search notes, medication lists, and specialist reports directly in ChatGPT instead of gathering records by hand. Writing back into the chart remains impossible.
Access stays read-only and tied to a US data agreement
Hospitals sign a Business Associate Agreement for the connection, the contract required in the US for handling health data under the HIPAA law. Only then can a hospital’s Epic system link up with ChatGPT for Healthcare, as OpenAI explains in its announcement. ChatGPT reads appointment notes, lab results, medication lists, and specialist reports from an authorized chart, answers questions from that data, and flags what changed since the last visit. The pilot partner is California-based UCSF Health. Its CEO Suresh Gunasekaran expects, according to OpenAI, that care teams will grasp complex charts faster and gain more time for conversations with patients. In an internal review, physicians rated 99.1 percent of 4,363 checked responses across 27 clinical use cases as safe. The figure comes from OpenAI itself and has not been independently verified. OpenAI has not announced a timeline for Germany or the EU: the integration currently applies only to US hospitals running Epic.
New plugin opens nine official health databases
Alongside the Epic integration, a data plugin now links ChatGPT to nine public health sources, including the trial registry ClinicalTrials.gov, the US drug label database DailyMed, the substance directory RxNorm, and the research database PubMed. A physician can check during a consultation whether a drug matches an ongoing clinical trial. Current side-effect reports can be pulled the same way, without searching several specialist portals separately. Critical context: several lawsuits are already pending against OpenAI. Families accuse the chatbot of giving risky medical advice, including a Florida pastor who alleges a “near-fatal recommendation,” as TechCrunch reports. OpenAI therefore stresses explicitly that ChatGPT is not meant for diagnosis or treatment decisions, only for organizing existing information. Large parts of the US public already use the consumer version of ChatGPT for health questions. The clinical variant with Epic access, by contrast, is reserved for medical staff with access to real patient charts and falls under the stricter contract and audit rules of health law. The regular consumer health feature of ChatGPT had already been rolling out across the US since July 2026; the Epic integration now extends it with a clinical, professional side.
Epic already runs its own AI summaries at large scale
ChatGPT is not entering an empty field in hospitals. Epic offers automatic chart summaries through its own tool, Art. According to the trade outlet The State of AI, Epic generates around 16 million such summaries a month across 42 percent of US acute-care hospitals. Specialized ambient-documentation vendors add to the field, including Abridge, Ambience, Nabla, and Suki. According to the report, roughly 1.6 billion dollars in venture capital had flowed into such vendors by September 2025, and their hospital contracts often run into seven figures annually. Start-ups keep raising capital for clinical AI beyond the established players, too: earlier this summer, Bunkerhill Health closed a funding round for its agent platform Carebricks. For hospital IT leaders, the new ChatGPT feature therefore mainly adds another choice among several overlapping AI tools on the same patient chart. Three criteria matter most for hospitals: ongoing costs compared with existing contracts, where patient data gets processed, and the added effort of running yet another system.
What matters now is whether hospitals can justify the added value of the ChatGPT integration against contracts with Epic itself and with ambient-documentation vendors that already run into seven figures. Unlike those established tools, ChatGPT for Healthcare processes no voice recordings, only chart content that is already documented – a narrower but also lower-risk approach than the dictation tools use. It remains open how quickly OpenAI expands the feature beyond the US, and whether European hospitals become a target market at all given stricter data-protection rules.
