A presentation for the next client meeting often starts with a blank slide and the question of the appropriate structure. Canva offers a feature called Magic Design that automatically creates an outline, layout, and sample text from a short topic description. The following article shows the necessary steps as well as the costs and limitations of the feature.
Canva transforms a topic description into a complete slide collection
Magic Design is the AI presentation feature of Canva. Only a short description is entered, such as quarterly update for the sales team or introduction of a new product for new customers. Canva then suggests an outline with several sections that can still be adjusted before the actual creation.
From the confirmed outline, the AI builds an initial slide set with layout, colors, and sample texts for each section. The result can then be edited in the familiar Canva editor, for example by adding personal images, company colors, or current figures.
The creation takes only a few minutes in the office routine
The path from the idea to the first finished slide in Canva goes through the following steps:
- Open Canva AI in the menu and select Design and Presentation.
- Describe the topic of the presentation in one to two sentences, including the occasion and target audience.
- Review the suggested outline and add or remove sections as needed.
- Generate the first slide set via Generate presentation.
- Select a suitable template from the displayed options.
- Adjust texts, images, and colors in the editor to your own content.
The process replaces the tedious gathering of individual slide templates. Instead of sitting in front of a blank space, an editable draft is created that can be adapted to your own figures and examples in just a few minutes. Especially in assistance, sales, and administration, presentations are often created under time pressure, for example before a short-notice kickoff meeting or a team introduction. Other tools are also taking this path: ChatGPT now also directly creates slides in PowerPoint, Microsoft Copilot offers a similar function in PowerPoint itself.
The free quota is sufficient for occasional presentations
A Canva account can be created at no cost. According to Canva, the free account allows up to 20 standard or premium AI uses per month – this quota is shared by Magic Design and all other AI tools from Canva. For an occasional presentation, this is sufficient, but with more frequent use, the limit is quickly reached.
Canva Pro costs around 12 euros per month for individuals, according to several German comparison portals, slightly less with an annual subscription; the exact amount is only shown by Canva during the payment process. The feature runs in the browser as well as in the Canva app and is available in Germany and throughout the EU. However, access to Magic Design may vary depending on the language set in the account, according to Canva; in case of doubt, a look at the account settings can help.
Anyone typing client names, contract details, or internal key figures into the topic description shares this information with Canva. Therefore, a general description without real customer data is recommended for corporate presentations; specific figures can be added manually after creation. A team account also allows for centralized control of access to the feature through administration.
Magic Design does not replace a personal review of the content. The generated slides contain placeholder texts and sample images that rarely fit the brand and real figures right away – sending them unchecked risks incorrect information or an inconsistent appearance. Therefore, it is worthwhile to review each slide before the presentation is actually shown to clients or colleagues.
